Background: Researchers and clinicians are working hard for prevention and management of dementia and its complications, no definite remedy is available now. Our aim is to investigate effects of occupational therapy in maintaining quality of life of patients having mild to moderate dementia.Methodology: 263 older subjects (new-182, old-81) were included between November 2010 and April 2013. After screening of all patients by a geriatrician, 192 were excluded having [Cognitive impairment with no dementia (CIND)]. Rest 71 patients were included after satisfying DSM IV criteria and were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Experimental group received newly developed occupational therapy intervention along with the drug, and control group received only drug for a period of 5 weeks. Both groups were evaluated using the six outcome measures a) Folstein Mini Mental status examination, b) Geriatric Depression scale Hindi Version c)Bristol Activity of daily Living, d) Modified Physical Performance test, e) BEHAV-AD, f)WHO QOL [Hindi Version] obtained baseline and reassessment after 5 weeks.
Result: Included subjects with mean age 69.39 having 33.80% of primary education, 32.39 % up to class 12, 47.88% of living with spouse, 47.88% of living with spouse and family, 78.87% married, 16.9% widowed, 22.53% unemployed, 43.66% retired. After application of novel occupational therapy on experimental group there is statistically improvement in the domain of Depression, ADL, Physical performance, and quality of life, out of all six domains.
Conclusion: The study reveals that the newly developed occupational therapy program can improve behavioral status, functionality, physical performance, mood and quality of life in elderly dementia patient at short term. A follow up study is required to ascertain the long term effect of treatment.

As a transducer of the environmental factors the pineal gland, together with the metabolically active thyroid gland, plays a major role in control of reproduction during different times of the year, in response to the changing environmental conditions of the tropical zone unlike in the temperate zone. Our avian model P. asiatica is a long day breeder. It is reproductively active during summer and quiescent during winter months. In this study we investigated the role of thyroid gland super-imposed by melatonin in the regulation of the annual male reproduction in this bird. The metabolically active thyroid gland presented a functional parallelism with the testicular activity suggesting that thyroid hormone is essential for reproductive activity and related metabolic energy for avian species. Our data also suggest an inhibitory effect of melatonin on thyroid gland function [weight, thyroxine (T3/T4) level and thymidine kinase activity, THK] both during active and inactive phases of the reproductive cycle. However, this inhibitory effect was less evident during the active phase. The low level of melatonin during the reproductively active phase might be due to long days of summer which prevented the birds from being hyperthyroidic. Therefore, we suggest that the level of melatonin serves as a physiological check to control the seasonal reproductive activities of gonads and thyroid which synergistically play most important physiological roles in energy metabolism of these seasonally breeding bird P. asiatica.Keywords

Objectives: To discuss the effect of shear wall and its location on the linear and nonlinear behavior of irregular buildings with different eccentricities. Analysis: The behavior of eccentrically loaded buildings with and without shear wall is compared using linear static, linear dynamic and nonlinear static analysis with the help of a finite element based software. The parameters considered are Base shear, Storey drift, Torsion and Reinforcement in columns and hinge formation in the structure. Findings: The study concludes that provision of a box type shear wall at the core gives the best behavior but it is not desired from architectural point of view. Hence shear wall on the outer edges is more advisable to improve the behavior of asymmetric buildings. The location of shear wall do not have significant effect on the nonlinear behavior except that the position of hinges vary. Novelty: The study of effect of shear wall location in eccentrically loaded structures, especially its nonlinear behaviour gives a more precise idea on provision of shear wall.Keywords

This paper discusses the complex behaviour of asymmetric structures; a study on the influence of variation in eccentricity due to mass asymmetry (using different magnitudes of asymmetry and different magnitudes of mass) on the linear and nonlinear behaviour of structure using response spectrum and static pushover analysis. The study is done using ETABS 9.7.4 software. The study concludes that increase in eccentricity, mainly increases the torsion due to seismic forces and does not have significant effect on the lateral displacement of the structure. This increase depends on both the magnitude of mass and the magnitude of asymmetry.Keywords
